Scouting for Food: November 11 & 18, 2017

It’s time once again for the largest one-day food drive in the country, organized by the Greater St. Louis Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America — Scouting for Food 2017!  Sunset is ready to break more records this year (to beat 2.2 million items of food gathered in 2016) during collection day, Saturday, November 18.

What is Sunset’s role?

2017 marks the 14th year Sunset has provided the logistics services to Scouting for Food.  Together, with a variety of local carriers who ALSO volunteer their time and equipment, we track, dispatch, and ensure all pallets of collected food are transported from local neighborhood firehouses to the St. Louis Food Bank. The food collected (in a single day) stocks over 500 pantries in metropolitan St. Louis, southeastern Missouri, and southern Illinois.

How can you help?

Carriers:  If you are a driver or trucking company in the greater St. Louis area and would like to volunteer your time for a minimum of four hours on Saturday, November 18, we would greatly appreciate having you on board!  We kindly ask that you fill out a quick questionnaire you can download HERE.  Return the completed back to Truckload Carrier Relations Manager, Mike Fritz.

For more detailed information regarding donating your time or truck, please view our FAQ’s.

Shippers:  If you are a Sunset shipper, Sunset is asking for your contribution of non-perishable food OR any products your company manufactures.  Product donations are used for volunteer driver gift baskets and are often a great marketing opportunity; anything is welcome!

Food may also be donated through the Scouting for Food bag distribution to most metro St. Louis neighborhoods on Saturday, November 11 or to any participating MERS Missouri Goodwill Store.  If sending to the Sunset’s corporate headquarters (11325 Concord Village Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63123, Attention: Mike Fritz), please do so before before Friday, November 17.

Ideal items for donation:

  • cans of hearty soup, stew or chili
  • canned tuna, chicken, turkey, salmon or luncheon meat
  • canned fruit
  • cans of 100 percent pure fruit or vegetable juice
  • canned vegetables, tomato or pasta sauce
  • cans of beans, refried beans or lentils
  • cans of evaporated milk

Stay tuned for more news and opportunities to give back during the 2017 Scouting for Food event.  Thank you for your continued support and for making a tangible difference in Sunset’s home city.
